Welcome to soccer at Tower Grove Park! We are very excited to get the Spring 2024 season started. Our outdoor program is hosted by Tower Grove Park, held on-site at Soccer Field 6. The nearest cross-streets to this field are Lawrence Street and Magnolia Ave.

Directions: Do not put “Tower Grove Park” into your Maps and expect to go to the right place. :) Most Maps apps will take you to the complete opposite side of the park. If you are exiting from Highway 40/64, take the Kingshighway exit and go south on Kingshighway. Follow South Kingshighway until you get to a stoplight at Magnolia Ave. Turn left onto Magnolia Avenue and follow Magnolia for about 1 mile, until you near Lawrence Street on your left and see a soccer field on your right. There should be plenty of street parking along Magnolia Ave. Look for us to be in bright orange shirts.

Class Location: All players registered for the MINI class will be playing near the #1 sign. All players registered for the CLASSIC class will be playing near the #2 sign. All players registered for the PREMIER class will be playing near the #3 sign. If you need help, ask a member of the Soccer Shots team in an orange jersey when you arrive at our Field.

Weather: Tower Grove Park operates an Athletic Fields Hotline - (314) 771.4451. This hotline is updated by park staff at 3PM during the week and at 8AM on Saturdays and Sundays. As weather and field conditions change, the park staff will update the hotline accordingly. We are notified of field closures through this hotline. As soon as we are notified of a closure, we will send an update to the email address and mobile number on file with us. Our standard is to communicate within one (1) hour of your session's scheduled start time; however, weather conditions and field status may change quickly. If there are situations when we have to cancel less than 1 hour before start time, we will send alerts as quickly as practically possible. Additionally, our office phone line - 636.697.7414 - is available and monitored starting at 8:00 a.m., Monday - Saturday. View our Weather Guidelines here.

Other Helpful Info: Bring a water bottle for your player and seating for yourself. This field does not have bleachers available so camping/folding chairs or picnic blankets work well. Players should be dressed for the weather. Wear soccer cleats or tennis shoes. Shin guards are not required. We love to see players wearing their Soccer Shots jerseys but if you forget it, it’s OK! It’s always a good idea to go potty right before we start.

Schedule: This season is scheduled for March 23 to May 11. Should any sessions be cancelled, we have 5/18 and 6/1 reserved for make-up sessions. We make every effort to reschedule and make-up all cancelled sessions; however, we cannot guarantee additional make-up dates should there be more than 2 cancelled sessions in a given season.

Game Play: Soccer Shots sessions are instructional and utilize developmentally appropriate practices for children between age 2 and 8. From time to time, our sessions include scrimmaging. When we scrimmage, we use this approach:

Soccer Shots games are played using an intentional and developmentally appropriate approach that progresses from week to week, allowing children to learn as we go.

Our objectives are:

    • Helping children learn scrimmage concepts such as:
      • playing with one ball
      • boundary lines/the meaning of “out of bounds”
      • moving in the correct direction on the field and scoring in the opposite net
      • cheering for teammates, working together with our friends, and waiting our turn to play,
not using our hands to pick up the soccer ball or to push another player, etc.
    • Introducing young players to a game environment in such a way that children have a positive and fun experience while playing the game of soccer.
    • Further developing skills taught during weekly Soccer Shots sessions. You may see our coaches pause game play, especially in the early weeks, to reinforce or capitalize on coaching moments related to spacing, passing to a teammate, etc.

Ground Rules & Other Tips for the Grown Ups

We do not keep score in Soccer Shots, nor do we have officials.

We cheer for our friends and teammates.

Family members are asked to cheer and encourage, not to coach or correct.

The most important words you can say to your child when they walk off the field, now and as they grow older, is: “I loved watching you play.” To learn more about why we take this approach, please watch this video from Changing The Game Project founder, John O’Sullivan. https://youtu.be/VXw0XGOVQvw

Your child might be uncomfortable, shy, or upset when you arrive at the field. It’s likely a new place with unfamiliar faces. If this happens, telling your player things like “try your best” or “I believe you can do it” are helpful.

Playing with just ONE soccer ball is tough. It’s very common for younger players to cry and get very sad about this hard truth. If this happens with your child, don’t fret, as this will improve over time.

It’s always a good idea to go potty right before we start.

Your player will probably be hungry when we finish playing. Post-game snacks are helpful, and there are many great eateries nearby, along with Tower Grove Park's awesome Farmers Market.
